Jamie has demonstrated a limited level of competence in using coordinates to represent position and describe a route. A scale has been provided but the compass rose is incomplete and the grid coordinates have been incorrectly labeled. A starting point has not been provided. Compass points have been included in the instructions but the directions are unclear. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade standard D midway through Stage 3.

Foundation Statement strands

  • Working Mathematically
    Students ask questions and undertake investigations, selecting appropriate technological applications and problem-solving strategies. They use mathematical terminology and some conventions and they give valid reasons when comparing and selecting from possible solutions, making connections with existing knowledge and understanding.
  • Space and Geometry
    Students construct and classify 3D objects and 2D shapes and compare and describe their properties. They measure, construct and classify angles and make simple calculations using scale.
