Lee has demonstrated basic knowledge and understanding of the structure and features of a factual description. A limited description of popcorn has been provided and a personal statement has been made. The text is brief and only simple sentences have been used. Minimal detail has been provided but a simile has been used to help describe the food. The spelling is mostly correct but some punctuation is missing. To progress further, Lee could add additional detail and use a wider variety of sentence types. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade D standard midway through Stage 1.

The student has a basic knowledge and understanding of the content and has achieved a limited level of competence in the processes and skills.

    Students write simple literary and factual texts on familiar topics for known readers by planning and reviewing their writing. They write using basic grammatical features and conventions of punctuation, showing awareness of different purposes, audiences and subject matter. Students spell using knowledge of sight words, letter-sound correspondence and other strategies. They write using letters of consistent size and slope in NSW Foundation Style and use computer technology to produce texts, recognising simple conventions, language and functions.
