Alex has demonstrated sound understanding of the structure and features of a factual description. The text is appropriate but brief. Little detail has been provided and only simple sentences have been used but similes have been included to describe the look, feel and smell of the toy. The punctuation is simple but correct and there is adequate use of strategies to spell words. To progress further, Alex could extend the description to include more detail and use compound sentences to link ideas. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade C standard midway through Stage 1.

They write using basic grammatical features and conventions of punctuation, showing awareness of different purposes, audiences and subject matter. Students spell using knowledge of sight words, letter-sound correspondence and other strategies. They write using letters of consistent size and slope in NSW Foundation Style and use computer technology to produce texts, recognising simple conventions, language and functions.
