Bailey has demonstrated extensive knowledge and understanding of the structure and features of a factual description. The text is clear and detailed with a personal concluding statement. A range of descriptive language has been used and similes have been included. Compound and complex sentences have been used and the sentence beginnings are varied. There is proficient use of spelling strategies and the punctuation is varied and appropriate. To progress further, Bailey could use paragraphs to structure information. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard at the end of Stage 1.

The student has an extensive knowledge and understanding of the content and can readily apply this knowledge. In addition, the student has achieved a very high level of competence in the processes and skills and can apply these skills to new situations.

  • Writing
    Students write simple literary and factual texts on familiar topics for known readers by planning and reviewing their writing. They write using basic grammatical features and conventions of punctuation, showing awareness of different purposes, audiences and subject matter. Students spell using knowledge of sight words, letter-sound correspondence and other strategies. They write using letters of consistent size and slope in NSW Foundation Style and use computer technology to produce texts, recognising simple conventions, language and functions.
