The following strands are covered in this activity:

Writing

Description of activity

Students plan, review and write a description of a character from a book they have read or a film they have viewed. They focus on using language to create a sense of the physical and non-physical aspects of their chosen character.

Variation: Students write a description of a character they have invented.

Suggested materials
Pens, pencils, paper, computer (optional)

Prior learning

Students have read descriptions of different literary characters. They have discussed the purpose of literary descriptions and the need to use descriptive language to help the reader imagine what is being described.

Outcomes

Producing Texts (WS1.9)
Plans, reviews and produces a small range of simple literary and factual texts for a variety of purposes on familiar topics for known readers.
Grammar and Punctuation (WS1.10)
Produces texts using the basic grammatical features and punctuation conventions of the text type.
Spelling (WS1.11)
Uses knowledge of sight words and letter-sound correspondences and a variety of strategies to spell familiar words.
Handwriting and Computer Technology (WS1.12)
Produces texts using letters of consistent size and slope in NSW Foundation Style and using computer technology.

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • plan, review and write a literary description
  • use detail to help a reader imagine what is being described
  • use a range of adjectives and/or adverbs to describe a character
  • apply knowledge of spelling conventions and strategies
  • use letters of consistent size and slope in NSW Foundation Style
  • demonstrate basic desktop publishing skills using a computer.
