Guidelines for marking

The following guidelines for marking show one approach to assigning a value to a student's work. Other approaches may be used that better suit the reporting process of the school. Categories, marks, grades, visual representations or individual comments/notations may all be useful.

Range

A student in this range:

11-15

(High)

  • produces detailed and accurate shapes and forms using a range of tools and functions within the selected CAD application
  • aligns and mates objects and surfaces to produce a 3D model of the selected item
  • uses rendering functions successfully to enhance the final presentation

6-10

(Satisfactory)

  • produces a range of shapes and forms using a limited range of tools and functions within the selected CAD application
  • combines some objects or surfaces through the application of alignment and/or mating functions
  • applies colour and/or texture and/or tone to selected surfaces and shapes

1-5

(Progressing)

  • produces elementary shapes and forms using CAD
  • demonstrates limited skill in aligning and/or mating surfaces and shapes
  • applies colour to a selected surface or shape.

Feedback

Assessment for learning and feedback in a student-centred, project-based practical learning environment normally occurs through the teacher interacting with individual students or small groups. While circulating within the class the teacher offers advice, answers questions, guides research and experimentation, and demonstrates practical activities and techniques as a form of assessment for learning. This assists the teacher to formulate plans relating to the immediate or future needs of individuals, groups or the whole class. The feedback assists students to develop knowledge and skills that are used in their project work, which may be completed after a number of weeks or possibly over a whole semester.

The assessment for learning that takes place assists the teacher to consider the level or depth of resources that may be needed in the current or next lesson or lessons in the teaching program they are using. While undertaking this Activity, students will be provided with regular and ongoing oral feedback. This feedback will inform the development of the presentation through individual instruction and demonstration of specific processes and techniques.

The teacher will provide written feedback on a student's ability to use CAD technologies to:

  • produce solid shapes
  • manipulate, align and mate objects and surfaces
  • apply rendering functions to produce a realistic image.

Future directions

This Activity develops knowledge and skills that will be further developed and applied in subsequent units in Graphics Technology. Students will be given further opportunities to apply feedback from this Activity to future CAD presentations.
