Teenage life in a Chinese-speaking community and Australia

Description of activity

Students create a PowerPoint presentation of about 10 slides in which they present a typical weekday and weekend for a teenager in a Chinese-speaking community and for a teenager in Australia. Students include daily routine, hobbies and pop culture and make comparisons between teenage life in a Chinese-speaking community and Australia. Students are to write in Chinese.

Context

Students have been learning about hobbies, school and daily routine.  They know how to express time, periods of time, likes/dislikes, superlatives, and associated vocabulary.

Outcomes

A student:
5.UL.3 uses Chinese by incorporating diverse structures and features to express own ideas
5.UL.4 experiments with linguistic patterns and structures in Chinese to convey information and to express own ideas
5MLC.2 uses linguistic resources to support the study and production of texts in Chinese
5.MBC.1 explores the interdependence of language and culture in a range of texts and contexts
5.MBC.2 identifies and explains aspects of the culture of Chinese-speaking communities in texts

Criteria for assessing learning

(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • present an interesting and creative PowerPoint presentation of about 10 slides about teenage life in a Chinese-speaking community and Australia
  • make a comparison between teenage life in a Chinese-speaking community and Australia
  • convey information and express own ideas by selecting and incorporating particular linguistic structures and make linguistic choices to enhance intended meaning
  • demonstrate effective communication in clear and cohesive text by applying grammatical rules and conventions consistently
  • apply knowledge of the conventions of the writing system.
