Description of activity

Students complete a listening task based on the song ‘Love is in the Air’ from the film Strictly Ballroom. They are played the music at least four times and are asked to describe how each of the concepts of music have been used in the song. Students are to incorporate graphic and/or traditional notation into their responses to aid their descriptions.

Context

Students are engaged in a unit of work that involves performing, composing and listening activities based on the topic Music for Radio, Film, Television and Multimedia. As a group, and individually, they have responded to a wide variety of listening repertoire through concept-based listening tasks. Recently, students have been encouraged to incorporate graphic and/or traditional notation into their listening responses to further highlight what they are hearing. They have focused on the concept of texture in the use of this notation.

A student:

4.7 demonstrates an understanding of the musical concepts through listening, observing, responding, discriminating, analysing, discussing and recording musical ideas
4.8 demonstrates an understanding of musical concepts through aural identification and discussion of the features of a range of repertoire
4.9 demonstrates musical literacy through the use of notation, terminology, and the reading and interpretation of scores used in the music selected for study.

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • describe the use of musical concepts in their written responses including the use of, and changes in, duration, pitch, dynamics and expressive techniques, tone colour, texture and structure
  • devise and use graphic symbols to represent the variations in the use of musical concepts including changes in duration, pitch, dynamics and expressive techniques, tone colour, texture and structure
  • represent the use of texture in the piece through successfully representing the role of the individual parts and the parts combined using graphic and/or traditional notation.
