Foundation Statement strands

The following strands are covered in this activity:

Working Mathematically, Measurement and Data

Description of activity

Students draw a picture of an activity at a particular time of day and record this using analog and digital time.

  1. Students draw a picture of an activity they enjoy doing at school, at home or in the community.
  2. Students show the time the activity might take place using both an analog clock and a digital clock.
  3. Students select three events during the day and show the time on both analog and digital clocks. At least one event should be on "half-past".

The suggested time allocation for this activity is 20 minutes.

Suggested materials

Pencils, blank paper

Prior learning

Students have associated everyday events with particular hour and half-hour times, and described the position of the hands on a clock. They are familiar with the terms ‘o’clock’ and ‘half-past’, and with analog and digital clocks. Students have practised reading and recording times on the half-hour.

Board of Studies NSW, Mathematics K–6 Syllabus, p 113

Outcomes

Time (MS1.5)
Compares the duration of events using informal methods and reads clocks on the half-hour
Communicating (WMS1.3)
Describes mathematical situations and methods using everyday and some mathematical language, actions, materials, diagrams and symbols

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • record half-hour time on analog and digital clocks
  • relate activities during their day to times of the day
  • represent a mathematical situation using diagrams
