City as Utopia - Relief prints

Description of activity
Students use photographs and drawings to develop a design for a relief print that represents the city as utopia. They select and consider how various signs, symbols and visual codes communicate aspects of the city to an audience. Students carve the lino block experimenting with different cutting techniques, linear qualities and compositional devices. They make a small edition of prints focusing on printing techniques and colour manipulations. The teacher will provide written feedback for this assessment activity. The suggested duration for this assessment for learning activity is 5-6 lessons of 80 minutes duration.
Context
Students have investigated and represented aspects of the city as utopia using different artmaking conventions and procedures, including photography, drawing and collage. They have investigated how artists – painters, sculptors, architects – have communicated a point of view about the city.

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their:
- awareness of the conventions and techniques of relief printing evident in the selection and refinement of cutting techniques, printing choices and colour manipulation
- understanding of how the structural frame can be used to create signs and symbols which represent ideas about the urban environment through experimentation with visual qualities such as composition, colour, scale, shape, texture, and juxtaposition
- investigation of the relationships between the agencies of the conceptual framework in communicating ideas and intended meaning about the world in a visual form to an audience.
