Description of activity

  1. Students design a realistic meal plan for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children) for a week. The meal plan must include all meals and snacks. The meal plan should reflect the NHMRC Dietary Guidelines for Australian Adults and Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents in Australia.
    *The teacher may wish to include a family member with special dietary needs eg allergy to a specific food.
  2. Students write a one page report describing the cultural and social influences on a family’s food choices.
    * Students may present their report in other formats eg powerpoint.

Context

Students have learnt about the various food groups, the NHMRC Dietary Guidelines for Australian Adults and Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents in Australia. They have explored the notion of healthy food habits, nutritional requirements and the relationship between food habits and health.

Outcomes

A student:
4.6 describes the nature of health and analyses how health issues may impact on young people
4.12 assesses risk and social influences and reflects on personal experience to make informed decisions
4.15 devises, applies and monitors plans to achieve short-term and long-term goals.

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • plan a realistic weekly meal plan for a family of 4 that reflects healthy food habits
  • cater for any dietary requirements for different family members (if included in task)
  • identify cultural and social influences and describe how these can support or hinder healthy food choices.
